GM to XG MIDI File Conversion

Using Cakewalk Pro Audio Ver. 9

PART ONE - CAKEWALK 9 SETUP

INITIAL HARD DRIVE SETUP
The first step you should take is to download GMtoXG.zip which will include these pages, and sample GM/GS MIDI files used in this tutorial. Save the .zip file to your Desktop.  Then, using WinZip, extract to a folder on your desktop, which will be named "GMtoXG".  The original .zip file can then be deleted. Browse to the GMtoXG folder and double-click "PartOne.htm" to open tutorial. You can print at your leisure, or simply leave the file open in your browser while working with Cakewalk.  If you print, from your Browser select  File | Page Setup. Make sure you set all margins to 0.50".

INITIAL CAKEWALK 9 SETUP
1. Open Cakewalk, but do not load any files.
2. Click on Options | MIDI Devices (top Menu bar)
3. The following window will open:

4. Select your Input Device, and an Ouput Device.  If you have a good sound card, the name will appear, such as "SB Audigy 2 MIDI IO".  This is what you would choose for a MIDI Adaptor cable connected to the joystick port.   For Output,  select MIDI IO to send data back to your external Yamaha Synthesizer, or sound module that you may have.  If you are using a USB MIDI adaptor, then you would select that instead for both input and output.  If you are changing your output device, click on the top highlighted one to deselect, then click on the device you want to use, then click the "Move Selected Devices to Top" button, then OK.

5. Click on Options | Instruments  and the following screen will appear.  This is a screen print of instrument definitions that I have already loaded under the "Uses Instrument" heading.  For most Yamaha instruments, you must have Yamaha XG and Yamaha XG Drum Kits in this list.  Note that some of the lower priced PSR units only support General MIDI instruments, but they must have the Yamaha XG Drum Kits installed.  Again, the lower priced units support only the Standard Drum kit, but it still must be installed to get the right Bank information for Cakewalk.

6. If Yamaha XG and Yamaha XG Drum Kits are not showing in your Instrument list, click the "Define Button". Again, if you do not have Yamaha XG and Yamaha XG Drum Kits showing in this list, click the "Import" button.
7. When you click the "Import" button, you must browse to find the Cakewalk folder. The usual installation can be found by clicking on the "audio" folder, then on "cw9" folder, on your C: drive.
8.When you are in Cakewalk folder, click on "Yamaha.ins" to highlight, then click the "Open" button.
9.You can scroll down the list of Yamaha instruments to see if your specific Synth or module is listed.  If so, select your instrument and click "OK".  Go back again and select any associated Drum sets.  In our instructions we are working with Yamaha XG and XG Drum kits, which we have highlighted to import.
10. The Instrument definition and Drum Kits you have imported will now appear in both the screens shown in steps 5 and 6, and the screen below. Under the Port/Channel heading, click on Channel 1, then the Yamaha XG instrument.  Hold down the shift key and click on Channel 16 to highlight all channels as shown below.

Next, click on channel 10 and it will become the only highlighted item.  Now click on "Yamaha XG Drum Kits", to connect to channel 10 only.   This will complete the assignments.  Make sure "Save Changes for Next Session" is checked. Then click the "OK" button.

SHUT DOWN CAKEWALK and you are ready to begin conversion of files from GM/GS to XG compatible.
