Alex (Alexei) Ustinov: Director of MIDI Technology

SE HISTORY

Alexei    I haven’t noticed when and how Style Enhancer, or to be more exact, Performance Modeling method, has become the most important project for me.  At the end of 1992 one of my close friends suggested that I start some unusual research and offered the support.
Back in 1992 NTONYX Computer Laboratory comprised just about 6 specialist researchers but we ventured at the same time into about 4 projects concerning working out hardware and software. All these projects were in the same field - we were willing to create the means of synthesis and sound reproducing control that could impart xpressiveness to electronic music.

After three years of research all projects yielded positive experimental results and were crowned with creating pilot samples. We managed to find some solutions for several problems particularly important for solo synthesizers, which, as I see it, have not yet been solved in models of known producers.
One of the research projects was devoted to automatic analysis of electronic parts in order to enrich them with performance nuances. We were analyzing live performance, looking for its laws and at the same time were working out an approach to midi data transformation. We made 4 or 5 software variants altogether, but no sooner than the end of 1995 did we manage to create a users variant — Style Enhancer v1.0. Most work was done by a small team, those are Anton Gurenko (programming), Eugene Komarov (psychoacoustics, structuring and recognizing principles) and my humble self (principle of system creating, algorithms of transforming). At various stages a number of people helped us, some were musicians, others - just our friends not connected anyhow with music.

Many were interested in our research, though most of them didn’t believe in the possibilities of Performance Modeling. I’m deeply grateful to everybody for their help but still more so to a wonderful pianist Elena Avdeenko. Now, with many difficulties already overcome, I realize that without her support and friendship I would never be able to bring this project to the state it is now. The true cause could only be fulfilled with love and every creator has always got the Muse, even if he doesn’t always realizes this. So, dear Elena - more and more thanks.
Helen
